Hydrangea vine

I got three nice young hydrangea vines last year at discount. They were about 18 inches tall. I placed them in a shady spot that has alot of water runoff so the roots might be too wet but they have died back this spring ...slowly but surely down to the ground. Anyone think its too wet? What else could it be?
