I can never seem to get the real Lucifer variety when I buy them locally...cannas are so misslabeled from the growers anymore.

Lucifer's Brother is just a young tyke and has just been moved, let me see how it does and maybe come fall I'll have something to offer you. :-)

Brugie -

Lucifer is is full sun......we'll see how he does with the wind ruining his leaves. He may have to move to a more protected area in the fall.

Ok. I've got a box of 10 Stuttgarts and they need to go into some growing medium. I'm a newbie, so will someone please guide me through a relatively simple process for planting. Include minor details like what size pot, how deep, soil type, fertilizer, watering and light requirements. Most appreciated. P.S. I'm into CONTAINER gardening. Don't necessarily want to sink these into the ground if not necessary, so I can move them if I need to for better growing conditions and "overwintering". See -- I learned a new term already!

Hi Benjamin,

Cannas are very easy, no need for extreme details at all. :-)
Did your plants come with any paperwork from the seller?

Stuttgarts often need to be in a shaded area because they will burn to a crisp in
full sun. As you live in Houston, I assume it gets pretty darn hot there, and even
moreso in the full sun. It seems to depend on your area with regard to lighting.

You might want to visit the plant profile for Stuttgart here on the forums:

BWILLIAMS et al:

I "harvested" about two 40 liter bags of "compost" (decomposed leaves and plant clippings that turned to a rich coffee consistency) from my DH's patio. It was full of earthworms and "doodle bugs," the ones with all the legs that roll up into a tiny round bead when you touch them. I mixed this compost with the potting soil I purchased and repotted most of the patio plants in it.

How beneficial or harmful are the doodle bugs to plants? I've always believed they helped with the aeration and bug control. Please let me know ASAP, as my DH is trying to exterminate the doodle "bugs!" He thinks they're some awful disease the plants have, and I put them in the pots on purpose. HELP, HELP, HELP!!!

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Ok, I found out the bugs are isopods more commonly called pillbugs or sowbugs or rolie polies, or doodle bugs. Do they harm the plants? I thought they were helpful in breaking down the compost pile. Please advise. Thanks.

P.S. I still like them...

Orlando, FL

I am not sure but i think the pill bugs are bad for plants. Fran
Think they eat on the plants....................
