Rusty foxglove (digitalis ferruginea)

Muncy, PA(Zone 5a)

Wondering if anyone can tell me if this foxglove is perennial and not biennial. I have a friend that swears by the fact that it is perennial. I raised some from seed and I am hoping in the worst kind of way that they are. Thanks for any information.

Hi Lorie

I can vouch for the fact that D. ferruguinea is a perennial on well drained soils in a sunny spot. Its from the Balkan region of Europe. I collect all kinds of foxgloves and this is one of my favorites. However, I do keep it in a pot in the green house over winter as our soil lies too wet in Winter.

If you have any of these kind of foxgloves save the seeds as they have a tendancy to die after a few years for no obvious reason, I guess you could call them a short lived perennial. I have recently lost my D. obscura and stupidly didn't save the seeds, fortunately a nursery I visited last week had one just waiting to be bought.
