My Ch. wisteria's leaves are turning red, but seem healthy.

Here's a pic of my new baby that flowered and is producing pods and new leaves, but they are red. Is this normal?

TIA

Yes, new growth of certain wisterias is always red. They will eventually turn green. This is my Wisteria floribunda "Honibeni" with new leaves.

I thought this might be the reason, but my nursery said it may need fertilizer. I didn't think so, because my ground is very fertile. THanks Clare

Sure, Marilyn. I'm a little surprised that your nursery didn't know that this is normal new growth, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised because I find that most nursery people I run into don't know much about plants at all.

You should never have to fertilize a wisteria. The roots have small black nodules, which are nitrogen-fixing nodules. The new growth color seems to be red in the spring, turning green in the summer and yellow in the fall before finally shedding altogether.
