Copper pipe/wire as a Trellis

I wanted to ask if there is any reasons not to use copper pipe and or wire in design and trellis work for things such as esplair trees vegatables like tomatoes and beans?? If toxicity is an issue, can coats of clear coat paint or varnish rectify the problem??
