Spider mite damage?

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

I have some "mystery" passiflora plants in the g-house (seeds came from a store-bought maypop-looking fruit).

I've been noticing some of the leaves on some of the plants are crinkling together, not drying-out crinkling, but rather in good health and as if they are being knitted together but yet not curled under..

In this pic the leave in my hand shows some of it. Note the center of the leaf (not just the edge), see how it is being pulled in?.

Is this something that mites would do?

Another leaf, better detail.

Shoe? You tried any plantain & comfrey oil yet? Sorry, couldn't resist!!!! ;~}

Seriously, there something sucking the juice outta them. I don't know what, especially if you're the one asking the question.

From my humble limited experience, all I can suggest is, if only a few leaves are affected, you might just remove the affected ones, if you don't see anything crawling or hiding on the plant. (Silly me, something is always crawling or hiding on plants!)

But you know what I mean. Anyway, then just wait and see if it reappears on other leaves. (Ah, the old "wait and see" world-reknowned method of killing plants gradually.)

If you're like my dad was, you could drag out the really big spraygun, and spray the H... out of whatever might ail it. (Doesn't matter what the solution in the spray is, it could work?)

You could panic and chop it all down, totally removing all roots--think Terminator.

Or you can wait and listen to someone who really has a clue about what you should really do.

I figured you could be possibly amused (or not) while you waiting for a real expert. ;!)

Hehehe...I'm always amused! (I'm the one that tells myself jokes, then laffs at the punch line as if I'd never heard it before!)

I agree...something is sucking on dem leaves, or doing something to them.

I'm not much of a sprayer unless I know what I'm spraying for. Good suggestion though on just pulling the 'ugly' leaves. Thanks.

Now as for the plaintain/comfrey oil....? (Shhh..my DD has it in her bathroom using it to ward off, off, ...well, a "facial blemish".)

It looks like mites to me. Some mite species are impossible to see with naked eye.

If your plants are small enuff you might try submerging them in warm water for a half hour. I think the recommended temp is 100ºF to kill mites. I'd squirt a little soap in the water with them too.

Shoe, I can't ever tell jokes. Either I can't remember the joke part, just the punchline, or I tell the joke only to forget the punchline. So I just have to make mine up as I go out of my twisted mind.

(facial blemish???????)

Now see, I told you somebody would come along who really knew what they were talking about!

That sounds like a good idea, Poppysue. (Well, it'll probably kill the little buggers. If it don't you'll at least have a clean plant with nice clean mites, or whatever it is.)

Okay, okay, I can take a hint! Ya'll just continue with the useful conversation I interrupted. Bye.

poppysue, thanks...that was my impression too. Them little boogers can do some damage in various ways (it seems to me).

I'll do as you suggest tomorrow. These plants are only about 2-3 ft vines so it should be easy enuff. Much obliged!

Judith, thanks for you input too! Humor is necessary in the garden world!!

Never a problem! Glad you found a solution for your problem.

You be sure and let all us "helpful" people know if solution doesn't work, and we need to conjure about it somemore!

I have the same problem with my Mexican Flame vine! ALL the new growth is green and healthy looking, but the leaves are all curled up. I can't see anything on them. Since it was a big plant when I bought it, and I uncurled it along the fence, washing is not an option. I just washed it down with "Sevin Ready-to-use Bug Killer" yesterday. I really hope it works, I waited a long time to find that vine!
