Three of my dogwoods, otherwise large & pretty, have never bloomed. The only thing they really have in common is that they're planted within a few feet of the house. One of them did have about 5 flowers last year, but those were small and misshapen. Hoping someone might have insight and a possible remedy to try.
dogwoods that never bloom
Well- we always added a thick layer of broken down pine needles around ours- along with mushroom composte. They bloomed every year. They also got plenty of water.
A local nurseryman suggested the cause may be the alkalinity of the the soil due to foundation of the house. Apparently, this can leach into the soil around new homes for 10 or more years. Didn't realize that! We had always used an acidic fertilizer, but he suggested a couple of applications of aluminum sulphate...says it will help the roots to actually absorb and use the fertilizer. Guess we'll know next spring.
