Think You Know Your Presidents??

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

1. A hotel room had been reserved for him but when he arrived, he was told there was no room available because he appeared to be a dirty farmer. (sorry, farmers!)

2. As the smallest president, he stood 5' 4" tall and weighed only 100 lbs.

3. At 17 years old, he restored order in his classroom with a bullwhip - after he had been hit on the head by a block of wood and soundly trounced his assailant.

4. Inauguration Day was a cold, stormy, March day. He refused to wear a coat, caught a cold that developed into pneumonia and died 33 days after taking office.

5. He had electric lights in the White House but was afraid to turn them on for fear of being shocked. The Johnston Flood and Wounded Knee Massacre occurred during his term of office.

6. Baby Ruth candy bars were named after his daughter. She died in her teens but the candy bar is still produced today.

7. He was the tallest president at 6' 4" and the first to sport a beard. His aide was bumped from the carriage when his son and two pet goats went for a ride. (this is a few years old; Clinton was tall too but not sure exact height)

8. The $100,000 bill sports his picture but it hasn't been printed in years and is used only between banks.

9. The only president to serve more than two terms, he was stricken by a crippling disease as a young man.

11. He officially named the Executive Mansion, the White House. It was painted with layers of white paint to hide black scars from fires set by the British during the War of 1812.

12. Nap-taking was his specialty - up to 11 hours a day. He was sworn in by his father who was Justice of the Peace in Plymouth, Vermont.

13. A fire in the fireplace in the Lincoln sitting room in July was the highlight of this president's day. He was also known for his "nit-picking" of staff members and servants.

14. He probably ran away from home more often than any other child. Once he hid in a haystack for several hours while his distraught mother cried right beside it.

15. He was infamous for slumbering off - at cabinet meetings, White House dinners, church sermons and funerals. He even dozed off in an open car during a campaign tour in New York City.

17. His pet cow, Pauline, grazed on the White House lawn.
