WINDOW BOXES!

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Do any of you have any good pics of nice looking window boxes with flowers in them (or links)?

I was looking up at the front of the house today, and saw that under our upstairs (so 2nd floor) enclosed sun room, is so "blank" It is off our bedroom.

I'd have to say the total space across the front of it is about 15 feet (?).

I envisioned this idea of putting a long window box with flowers there - I think it would be a BIG improvement on front of this old house (built 1910). The house is white, so I am thinking white boxes, because more of the flowers show up, and contrast against the house. I went on a google search tonight, and didn't find anything that spectacular. But I know that's because you haven't posted your pics with any of them. :)

I'd love some pics or links to show hubby that are appealing so I can talk him into "another" spendy venture............ (kidding, I work too)

In the spring, plant grape ivy and primroses that get 3-4 hours of sunlight a day. As the season progresses and gets hotter, replace the primrose with begonias or geraniums.

Idea 2: Towards the center/back of your window box you could plant 'Blue Victoria' Salvia. They come in blue, purple, or white. In front of the Salvia you could plant 'Heartbreaker' miniture rose for a touch of class, and on each side of the Salvic, plant "domino' Nicotianas; they provide long lasting color, stick in Lobelias; which adds tiny purple, lilac, white or blue blooms from late summer up until the first frost. On each front corner, plant Classic zinnias which will sprill gracefully over the edge of the box and then front and center, plant 'Bonanza' marigolds. The miniture rose and marigolds are used as fillers, the Nicotiana and Salvias are used for height and the zinnias and lobelia are used as trailers.

For Cascades of Color:
2 Globe Amaranths
6 Exacum affine
4 Dahlberg Daisies
4 Verbenas
2 Rose Perwinkles
1 Trailing Lantana
1 Variegated Trailing Vinca
The simple mix of blooms among the foilage can give any windowbox a lush feel and the preception of depth.

For the next you can incorporate a mix of trailing and erect flowering plants that offer shades of pink and rosy purple and then with a contrast add some lemon yellow wallflowers.
3 rose perwinkles
8 yellow wallflowers
5 dusty miller
8 ivy-leafed geraniums
8 regal geraniums
3 edging lobelias
3 verbenas

Now, if you would like more of the cottage elegance use flowers with thick, spreading foliage.
6 geraniums
2 dracaenas
8 petunias

I think painting your window boxes might really be fun. Let's say you paint them periwinkle blue - pink, purple, white and yellow flowers would stunning against the blue - might be a real pick-me-up for the house too. Keeping everything watered is the hardest thing with window boxes - especially in the summer. CoCo has a good list of window box winners.
