How soon can I plant roots?

Brown City, MI(Zone 5a)

I have some boxed roots for several Peonies.

In my zone 5, when is it ok to plant them? I sure don't want them to rot in the boxes. I have them out in the garage for now.

Hello Seedpicker,
I've been putting the roots I've bought in pots in the basement. It really is better to plant in the fall but that's how it goes. Most of the peonies I've gotten have already put out some growth and roots but I didn't want them getting nipped by any last minute cold spells. My plan is to put them in the ground towards the end of March or the first part of April here in zone 7a.
Good luck with yours.

Thanks skatayama,

I had read that it was better to plant Peonies in the Fall, but I always see these being offered in the Spring. In fact I decided to wait until fall last year and then I couldn't find any.

I've got room in the basement, so I'll take your advice and pot them up. I think these already have some root and top growth so I was concerned about leaving them in the boxes.

I think I have found a new obsession ................. Oh dear, I have so many when it comes to gardening already.
