Gourd Pollination Questions

chattanooga, TN(Zone 7b)

I'd like to plant two varieties of gourds this year. How far apart should I plant them so they don't cross-pollinate?

Is it best to plant large gourd varieties so they vine on the ground and smaller varieties can be trellised?

What about winter sowing--is it too late (or too early) to plant gourd seeds in NE Tennessee now?

Should I soak the seed before planting?

This is my first time growing gourds, so any wisdom is appreciated!

Peggy...you can start your seeds in the house...but do not plant them outside until after the last frost. I highly recommend the book: Gourds in your Garden, by Ginger Summit. Our local library has it and it is wonderful!!..The book shows you how to clip the "ears": off the seeds, then soak them. Also, read back to some of the previous threads here...lots of good info has been posted here.

I was at a gourd festival last week and asked how many varieties of gourds could I grow with out them cross pollinating> I was told that the first year didn't matter, unless you wanted to have some "true seeds"...then you would have to cross pollinate some by hand (shown in book).

Good luck....Jo
