using a laptop

As some of U may know we hope to be taking a trip to Alaska for the summer. We will have a laptop but I have never used one. DH's aunt & uncle who owns the LT has never used it & know nothing about puters. It was given to them by their son. What can I expect from it on the road? What about ISPs.. I know here in FL we are kinda remote & can only get small local ISPs. I don't understand how they can be used anywhere or can they? We will be on the road about 2 weeks each way.
I hope someone can give me some info on using it or at least tell me if I can.
