We've lived in our house for 20 years, but this year for the first time someing is digging pretty big holes in the backyeard, especially the muddy parts.
The holes are two inches round and several inches deep, the grass over them is pulled back.
Any ideas??
thanks,

What is digging holes?
Can you post a photo? Might help.
Maybe skunks looking for grubs?
Maybe gophers... i have gophers and sometimes the holes are plugged with loose dirt or even a mound of dirt over the hole.. i trap my gophers and pitch them when i catch one.. the cats catch more then i do though... but then i only set the traps when i notice them near a tree or my flowers... gophers will eat the roots of a plant or tree .. i have lost many of rose bushes and 4 young trees do to them.. that was before i started trapping them.. hope this helps..

Raccoons sometimes do that in my back yard. I think they are trying to get to underground grubs or slugs to eat.
On the positive side, my Dead Nettle has been doing much better since the raccoons damaged it. I guess it needed some abuse to encourage growth.
