Good place to look?

Victoria, TX(Zone 9b)

I've got spring fever, and I'm ready to start planning more garden work. I have a vast hillside, sprinkled with irises, with the base of the hill lined with daylilies.

Where's a good place to look for low-cost irises? Catalogs? Stores? I'm not looking for any specific one, just in general.

TIA,
-Jennifer

At Walmart, they have those "boxed" plants from Better Homes & Gardens. They are great for people like me that are pretty clueless. They are probably even out by now. I've gotten several in daylilies, asiatic and oriental lilies, astilbe, etc. and they have all done very well!

They have irises on e-bay. Stores don't normally sell bearded irises in the spring, so maybe that is bad to time to plant them in most place, so be forewarned. Myself, I've had success transplanting them at any time of year, but failure rate is high enough in the summer that I wouldn't transplant then unless I really had to.

hmmm.... ebay ... that's something to consider. Thanks, Kelli.

Home Depot have iris bulbs in the stores here now.
I can get some for you if you want.
Let me know colors you may want.

Hi, do you belong to a local garden club? We have a Spring Swap. I can't wait. Seeds and plants. It is fun and you get plants for FREE. I just love iris/daylilies/hosta.

I do not belong to a local garden club, no ..

It is a good idea though. My garden is very new, so swapping isn't an option , and probably won't be for another year or so until my garden grows.

Check out this link for catalogs - I've ordered from almost everyone on the list. For healthy plants at low cost, you can't go wrong with WOODLAND GARDENS:

I made the mistake of buying Iris in March last year from Home Depot & potting them up. (I thought I'd get a headstart.) We left for a short vacation & found that my daughter had overwatered them all to mush. I bought more and just kept them in the garage until April. The second group did not bloom yet, but I expect a colorful Spring!

Some other places (that I posted under the topic "buying irises" which I consider to be the best of the best also - - include these: (all of these will also send you free extras)

Puttytat,

Did you know that there is an iris named PUTTYTAT?

It's a Louisiana iris. I found it at iriscitygardens website: (under catalog, scroll down - click to Louisiana irises, then click to page 4 of 5 (Lousiana 4), and scroll down). Click on the picture to make it larger.

For cheaper iris, you could try http://www.gilberthwild.com/index.asp
but they don't start shipping until August. Trades go on well before that, though. I moved some of my son's patch after they were done blooming last spring, and they seemed to take hold really well.

Has anyone ordered from Zebra iris? What size do they ship? I really want to order some, and am just wanting to know what their plants are like.

Princeton, IL(Zone 5a)

I just finished ordering from Zebra on Margiempv's recommendation. They have some really cool iris, don't they?

I've ordered from them 3 different years now, and every year they have sent nice, FRESH, large healthy rhizomes. (Along with some extras) You'll be pleased. And If one dies before bloom season (they'll replace it free).
