What kind of tool would you use

to drill a small hole in the side of a glass jar?
I've seen a craft item which is a large mason-type jar with a "candle" inside. The candle is actually a plug-in, electrified light and the cord goes through the hole. Unfortunately the ones I've seen are in the $50 & up range. I figure I could make it myself, except I don't know how you drill the hole without breaking the jar.
