Opening email attachment

My sister sent me an email with some attachments. I scanned the attachments with NAV and they were okay. When I tried to open them I got a box asking what file (? I can't remember exactly what it said) I wanted to open them with and it listed a number of options.

I had no idea so I chose Adobe Acrobat. When I tried to open the attachment, Adobe Acrobat opened, then I got a AA error window which said "There was an error opening this document. File does not begin with '%PDF-'.

I have 2 questions:

1. How do I know what to select when it asks me?

2. Now what do I do?
