A friend gave me two buck eye seeds. They kind of look like avacado seeds only a little smaller. Does anyone have any experience with these and how would I start them?
Thanks
Jan
Buck eye tree
Buck eyes seeds need to go through a cold period. They are also known as horse chestnuts. Here in Wisconsin I just plant them in the fall and put something on top of the ground so the squirrels won't dig them up. I plant the seed at least 3-4 inches deep. In the spring after the snow melts, hopefully they'll come up.If anyone wants some buckeye seeds, just let me know and I'll send you some for postage.I also have black walnuts if anyone is interested.
If it isn't cold by you, you can probably put them in the fridge for a couple months, in moist peat, and that'll do about the same thing.
Yes, be sure to plant them immediately. A dried buckeye seed is a dead buckeye seed. Even letting the seeds dry out for a couple of weeks in the house is enough to kill the seeds.
