advice for new daylilies?

North Wales, PA(Zone 6a)

I have only grown the stella d' oro before. Just purchased several of 'sombrero way' and 'prairie blue eyes.' Any differences in care? Are they later bloomers? I kind of hope so because I have a new deck that will be finished next week and then they will be planted on the perimeter of the deck with some variegated iris, sedum groundcover, and a couple ivory halo dwarf dogwoods. Was hoping to enjoy orange and purple daylily blooms in late June or July.

Thanks so much for any advice!

Thanks everyone!

A lesson learned the hard way, don't douse the heck out of them with
fertilizer when you plant them.

Years ago I purchased some of the more expensive cultivars, carefully
prepared everything, fertilized them within an inch of their lives and sat
almost helplessly while they fried. They did survive, but it wasn't a quick
recovery.

Based on my experience, it is best to wait until they at least get settled in
before fertilizing, and even then, never go overboard.

Welcome to the wonderful world of daylilies! Are you familiar with the
differences between diploid and tetraploid?

Ah, Sombrero Way...A mid to late season bloomer with dormant foliage.
It will rebloom for you, too! Two foot tall with nice sized flowers about 5 1/"2 wide.
It's parents are Commandment x Crystal Ball.

Prairie Blue Eyes...A mid season semi-evergreen with nice 5 1/4" blooms.
It's parents are Prairie Hills x Lavender Flight.

One last bit of advice...remember their names and which ones they are. You may
or may not fall into the obsession, but if you do, you will be thankful you kept
track later on in your addiction. Be sure not to get out the checkbook at each
pretty bloom. Read as much as you can about daylilies before making large
purchases or buying very expensive cultivars.

Visit your public library to see if they have a good daylily book available. I certainly
don't know much, but it never hurts to learn more, read more.

Enjoy!

Badseed,

Oh my gosh, I didn't even notice the date on that post.

How the heck did I reply to something so old?

(scratches head in confused state)

I think with the goofy quirks we have been having lately, that may have caused it? OR, you could have searched something, landed there and started chatting. :) I've been here about five years and never met sansman so I have no idea if they are still around but I see they are not subscribed. Heck, back then, I don't even know if there WAS a hem forum! It could have been posted anywhere!
