I have no sound

I have a question and there seems to be so many knowledgeable and helpful here at Dave's Garden. My computer has no sound. I have Windows XP. I have tried using the computer's help areas and tried it's suggestions. On the lower right hand corner(my lack of correct terminology is showing my actual knowledge base of computer;-) ) is a volume control which I have tried to adjust. Is there any other trick that someone might be able to offer that I could try???
