Rooting advice, please

Tilton, NH(Zone 4a)

I have some Russian Olive twigs I picked for their flowers, and I'd like to root some. Can anyone give me advice? I love the scent of its flowers.

Hi Linnea,
I have no experience in rooting these but this is from my propagation book:
Russian Olive can be started by division, layers, root cuttings, but seeds are the method of propagation mostly used. Seeds are soaked in sulfuric acid for 1/2 hour, then stratified for 3 months, then sown in early spring. Hardwood cuttings taken early in spring root well, when treated with rooting hormone. Sorftwood cuttings are more difficult to root, but possible, under mist.
Good luck :)
Trish

Hi Linnea,
The Russian Olive is very easy to propegate, in fact it is on the top ten list of invasive alien plants. It was first introduced in the U.S. in the late 1800s and in many areas it is forcing out native species. In some states it has been declared a noxious weed. I don't mean to sound preachy-forgive me if I do. There are many native species that are just as attractive- to humans and birds- that do not pose a threat to our native plantlife.
Good Luck
Cynthia
