Erradic Mouse Pointer

I am having a problem with the pointer, on screen.

It will work for a reasonable length of time, but then it becomes uncontrolable and jumps all over the place...making pop-up windows appear, that have nothing to do with anything!! Or, it just disappears altogether, and I have to reset the computer or turn it off. Notice this happens when things are highlighted (and also sometimes not).

Has anyone had a problem like this, and found a solution?
