Freezes...on up-grade to Home XP

Sometimes a few times a day. I can even be on-line with DSL or just on my computer and for no apparant reason my computer freezes. I do the Cntrl/Alt/Delete and still nothing. I usually have to go and push the ON/OFF button.
I don't know if getting a new computer would help?
If 'yes' I had heard that Apples had less problems like this. What do you think? Thank you for your opinions and help. Margie in SJ
