southern magnolia
Is it a Magnolia grandiflora proper, or a variety like "Little Gem"? This is important as M. grandiflora is a rather large tree, but variety "Little Gem" stays fairly small. I like these in the landscape as a specimen tree myself. Just keep in mind that the tree is a little messy--it has fairly large seed pods that it will drop in the fall. This trait may affect where you place it (i.e. away from the pond/pool/driveway/sidewalk).
