Orange and Black Pansies

Lake Elsinore, CA(Zone 9a)

I saw an advertisement somewhere (I forgot where) that they are coming out with orange and black pansies for this fall season.

Does any one know who is growing these and where I might find out how to get some?????

Jul, do you mean a mix of orange pansies and black pansies, or a pansy that is orange and black? Last year I purchased seed for both black and orange pansies from Stokes Seed: http://www.stokeseeds.com/cgi-bin/StokesSeeds.storefront They were listed under the Crystal Clear series.

As far as a black & orange pansy is concerned, the nearest I've seen are Jolly Jokers. They are orange and purple: http://plantsdatabase.com/go/52958/ A black & orange pansy surely would be interesting!

Yes, I mean the ones that are black and ones that are orange.

Thanks for the information. I will check out Stokes and get some. Did they grow well for you?

How difficult are pansies from seed, Weezie? I have never grown them from seed. Do they need any heat to germinate? I know they are a more cool season annual. The Jolly Joker pansy is such a pretty one, just love it. I planted Princess Irene tulip in a container one year and overplanted Jolly Joker. One of my favorites.

Wezie, just checked your link, Jolly Jokers are very cute.

Thanks for the information on the black and orange pansies.

I grow pansies from seed; they are very easy. They germinate well in regular indoor conditions. They take a fair amount of time to flower, tho; they are technically biennials. I start seeds in June, and they are flowering by October. Or I start seeds in December and they flower by April.

Yes, Lupinelover is right... pansies and violas are very easy to grow and quick to self-seed, though they tend to cross pollinate. I start mine in March indoors under lights to set out in early June. They are one of the easiest plants to transplant into cell packs from the trays. When you start pansies from seed would depend on your season for these cool weather flowers.

The Crystal Clears I grew this year did very well. The black is very dark, as close to black as they can get. The orange was a bright clear color. The pansies are a medium size, not the huge ones. If you want those, try the Atlas Series: http://www.stokeseeds.com/cgi-bin/StokesSeeds.storefront

Thanks, I can't wait! I like to plant for the seasons colors. Better go cuz kittens are typing for me! Have to be on the computer when they are snoozing!
