Bog Irises

Bolton, Greater Manc, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Hi all!! I am looking for Irises that will tolerate boggy conditions to plant in my bottom allotment which nearly always has standing water. I know Siberica and Ensata do. Do you know of any others?

Swamp Iris. At least that's what we call 'em.
I have some that look like yellow flag and I'm pretty sure that's what they are. Quite invasive. The good thing about 'em is they can take being dry as well. http://plantsdatabase.com/go/666/
And I have some that are shorter and bloom purple. They look to be Blue Flag, but they get taller than 24". Not nearly as invasive as the other.

Wish I could send you some ... I have tons of the yellow.

Also, don't overlook the wonderful Louisiana Iris. Loves boggy conditions, and lots of named varieties.

Louisiana Iris ? is that an internationally recognised name?

actually there ia a clump of yellow Irises growing wild in the middle of my plot. I think they are your bog irises

yes Pseudacourus, someone recently sent me the variegated type and it is growing well. Couldnt remember the name!!

Franklin, LA(Zone 9a)

About Louisiana Iris, yes. It's like a separate type of iris

There are lots of named cultivars and people collect them, just like the tall bearded ones.

They are readily available in the US, don't know about across the pond ...

Psilo, I just ordered some La iris from Iris City in the US. Before I ordered, I surfed the web for sources. I found one place in Australia that had some beautiful LA irises but the cost of the certificate to send out of country plus the plants and shipping was prohibitive.

OH SUNdry they are absolutely beautiful and soo many!!! will have to see but havent seen anything like that in the UK ! :(

I would love to get hold of some of these. I have found this site http://www.seabrooknursery.com/Iris.htm Has anyone ever used them?
They say their irises flower in February but they are obviously much warmer than me. Has anyone any experience with growing them in and around zone 8?

Psilo

LA Iris can be bought here from Cotswold Garden Flowers and Merebrook Pondplants, I've also seen them for sale in Plants of Distinction too.

I've added some hyperlinks to a couple of Iris Societies here with their opinions of how they grow here.

psilo,
I'm in zone 9, and they flower starting in February here. In fact, their growing season is from September thru June. They go dormant in July.

I don't currently grow any, but I intend to focus on late bloomers. I have read that they bloom spring and summer, so I think it's possible to have blooms from February until June, someone who knows more will surely come along and let us know.

Psilo, I'm glad you have a source locally for LA iris. If you get any, please let us know which ones you get.I have 'Gamecock' and 'Freddie Boy' now. I've got them in a place that's kind of shady. I need to move them where they'll get more light and I can water them more because they like the water. I think I like the flowers better than the ensatas.

will do Merkat. In fact Cotswold nurseries is only 2 hours drive from me and it is also close to a renedvous point with a very close friend of mine so I may soon give them a visit!

I have some purple/blue LA iris. When I first got them a few years ago there was a hot debate over whether or not they would be hardy here in central Missouri. They certainly seem to be not only hardy here but multiply rapidly too.

I am a new La Iris collector. So far, I have about 10 or so. These are new this year so they haven't bloomed or I would be happy to send photos. I have the commonly known ones, easily purchased on Ebay. I am constantly searching for new sources. There are some gorgeous new hybrids coming out of Australia by a hybridizer named Pryor. They make me drool!! It's an obsession! I have to have more.
I am also collecting Japanese Iris. Those too are new. I will have some wonderful photos and trades for next year!

Morningdew, I saw some LA Iris that were awesome on an Australian Nursery website, but I saw some of the same irises on the Iris City Garden website.
