These large wasps are starting to show up in SE Michigan this summer. Does anyone know anything about them??

that's a wasp? Ours look different, a bit red to their body. That is one ugly little bugger.

I have seen some really big wasps here in FL. I have no idea what kind they are or what they do. I just try to stay out of there way. Bugguy would probably know...

We have these wasps in Florida. They eat other bugs (I think). I heard some furious buzzing one day and when I tracked it down I found one of these wasps trying to carry off a grasshopper! This picture was taken last June...it was a bit more than the wasp could carry.

Here is a link to solitary wasps that might help ID your large friends. http://www.msue.msu.edu/msue/imp/mod02/01500554.html

Hi Bohica! I can't remember if we have met....I am from Reynoldsburg too. Did you know they have reduced the Tomato Festival to just this weekend because of all the rain? Maybe it's just as well - my tomatoes have been lousy this year.

Thanks so much for the help; thats the one.

Floridian, I think that is a catydid the wasp is trying to make off with, not a grasshopper--they are closely related.
