Carpenter ants, Ugh....

Plymouth, MI(Zone 6a)

Has any one here had problems with Carpenter aunts? In the past few weeks we have had sawdust in our basement in several spots. We have also been killing large black ants down there. I assume that is what we are dealing with. We had an old stump out be the garage that has been filled with them this year and sprayed but I am not sure what is good for indoor use. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks

Boric acid mixed in Kayro syrup, Sweet-N-Low sprinkled around, either will work. Someone told me something the other day that works, but now I can't remember it. It was a common household product, I will have to ask them again.

Carpenter ants nest in wood that is moist, chewing it to make spaces for themselves. If you are seeing sawdust, you have a moisture problem somewhere in the area that is attracting the ants, and the leak that is causing it should be corrected. Terro also works--the ants take it back to the nest. However, I don't consider ants a problem if they are outdoors; they're just part of the natural cycle of wood decomposition, but if they're nesting in your home that's quite another story.

Kneff, They are in the house. I will try Terro and see if that works. It is damp in that area of the basement right next to the wall. Thanks for your suggestions.

We use Spectracide Carpenter Ant/Termite Killer - made of Permitherin (spelling?) , 5.35% concentrate. Definitely spray the outside border of the house, too.

Good luck! Save the house!
