wintersweet problem

Redmond, WA(Zone 9a)

Hi,
I am a novice gardener and am very glad that I found Dave's garden!
I have a double wintersweet (Chimonanthus praecox 'Concolor') which I planted this spring. Recently it started to show some stressed symptoms: the leaves are yellowing, and the yellowed leaves have black veins. Eventually they fade to almost white, become very brittle and fall off. Can someone here tell me if this is a pest problem or a physiological problem? And how can I correct them?
I really love the fragrant plants and try to plant as many of them as I can in my small yard. The recent additions include 3 gardenias (2 small and 1 big) and a red/white honeysuckle. Now both the small gardenias and the honeysuckle are flowering and I am jumping up and down for excitement!
I also found that almost every plant in my yard is food or house for some insect. Teeny weeny flies live on the sticky young buds and leaves of the rhodies, something is chewing the stevia leaves, some other things are eating the honeysuckle leaves, spider webs are found on young fruit tree buds, and recently a family of strange looking red beetles settle down on my thrift. They are making merry but I am worried sick whether these are pests or just innocent tenants. I hope that I don't have to use pesticides on them. Can someone here recommend a rational attitude and strategy towards these uninvited guests to one's garden?
Thanks!
Epi

HI Epi...Sorry, I can't help you....as anyone here can attest, I am here under false pretense....I don't garden and know very little about it....but I love the site and the people here. Why not go to the Welcome Mat Forum and tell us something about yourself. I'll go warm it up for you. Jo
