To Plug or Not to Plug

I have a printer and scanner hooked up to the computer. As the computer is warming up the scanner makes a groaning noise. I am not sure this is healthy for the scanner. Is it OK to unplug the 'accessories' when not in use? USB connected. Is this a usual practice?

PS Still trying to install a CD-RW with no luck. The company seems to be out of business. Their web site is as slow as molasses; their phone keeps disconnecting.
