I am doing well in my first endeavor. I have boxes a'bloomin', pots a'hangin' and Hostas a'hummin'! What an accomplishment for me!!! I am greating my garden in the morning inspecting and welcoming new bloomers. Most looks well but I do have somethings I can not identify. Please look at my pictures and help. If I haven't provided enough info, let me know.
For slug control, I use Ortho Bug-Geta Plus. (When I went outside to look at the label, I reread the directions. I was reminded that the rain we've been having in Atlanta has reduced the efficacy and that it needs to be applied every two weeks. Oops!) I have seen rabbits around.
What happened to the bud in the picture that has my hand holding a brown leave (had to do SOMETHNG to increase the contrast)? It looks like 1) some one bit into it and 2) there is something fuzzy on it. I invite you to visit my journal for the photos of the problem.
A beginning gardener needs help!
I have am no longer having problems. I have posted my pics here.

I posted the only way I knew how. Is there a better way?
Thanks for your help.
Heh justjill, You did a great job of posting your problems, just wish I had all your answers!
Pic #4 sure looks like mealy bugs, but I didn't know they could do that much damage, they must have had help!
As for the black, well you've enjoyed our wonderful weather, it's probably a fungus, or rot, or some other despicable rain-induced malady! Hasn't it been a wierd summer?
Don't worry, someone will come along with your answers!
vi,
That black stuff is sooo gross! And, I don't know mealy bug from a phone bug, tee hee. But, you've given me a place to start.
Is this a wierd summr??? YOU BET it is. Thanks.
well, if no jumps in here, cut out all that black gunk and spray a fungicide! For the mealy bugs, I usually use water/alcohol spray. (Not the 'good stuff' neither!
BTW, did you get my e-mail?
For slugs and snails there is a really effective nontoxic product that's marketed under 2 brand names, Sluggo and Escargo. It kills only the slugs and snails and nothing else, and then decomposes into an actual nutrient for the soil. That way you don't need to worry about poisoning anything else.
Jill, I think the Summer Music just burns - that is what I think happens to mine. It just sort of melts down. Brenda
