Yuuuuck Red and Black catepiller

Montezuma, NM(Zone 5b)

Oh yuuuuck I have no idea what this is. I took eight shots and this is the best picture I got. I thought I had aphids which I might. But, there is also this gross red and black wormy looking thing chomping down on the leaves of one of my cherry trees. What I thought was a horrible infestation of black aphids is waste from this bug. I put these in spring of 2000. They have set fruit alrady. Argggggh. I have not wanted to spray. Oh man! Help!

Okay, so my pictures stunk. In the light of day, my discovery occured at dusk, these are bugs. They have six legs and chompers. They are black with spines, segmented, have pale underbellies, and use their tail end to manuever and grab on. It seems to function like a suction. They are definately chomping leaves. There are also lots of black aphids. I am not planning on sticking my nose in any further to see how much are aphids etc. The ladybugs are already to the rescue. I now have enough info, I hope for a search. Wish me good luck. And, if you have any information please let me know asap.

I'm confused...you have TWO different pests? One is a caterpillar, and the other a bug?

Try another pic, and set your size up abit on the camera. You've got my curiosity up now! ;>)

Ok shoe,
I'll try another pic. I've just discovered this camera seem to have it's limitations. What do you mean set my size up?

There are two critters and one friendly on my cherry tree. Aphids, lady bug, and this other ugly thing! Been searching the net and read that catipilars have three sets of front legs. That is all the legs this thing has. Ok enough writting. Out to the garden I go.

There should be a setting on your camera that determines the size of the pic you are taking. choose something like 1200 X 900 or the like (you can resize it down to 640 X 480 later).

Did I say that right, folks?

BTW, what does spraying aphids with water actually do. This tree is one tree away from my deformed iris that had aphid trouble early. I WANT A SPRAY GUN! arghhhhhhhhhh
kokopelita wants to go hide!
and mollie wants to go for a ride!
We are going to runaway for a while. Take a drive to the country. O, yea we're in the country. Maybe we'll take a walk to the pond.

Hah!...You've just been worried about the larva of the lady bug! That is my most favorite bug of all! I love seeing those babies!
Mollybee, you're too smart! Most folks don't know what that one is!

'Smatter of fact Koko, that larvae eats more aphids than the adult ladybud does. Encourage them! You're gonna have gazillions!

Whewww...glad we got to the bottom of this! :>)

Ahhh yes but we haven't heard from Koko just yet....I could be wrong. Hoping that is what it is though, because those are one of the bestest bugs one could have in their garden!!

What say Koko? Does this look like your Red and Black caterpiller?

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

Welp, from her pic, that's a lady bug larva. No doubt.

Sheesh, she must still be out cruising with that dawg...or swimming in the pond.

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

O nooo I hope she didn't fall in the pond!! Don't reckin she decided to go frog giggin do ya? LOL

Oh, Mollybee, if only you'd been around earlier. I felt sooo good when I came back. Now, I'm oh I can't believe it. I'm a ladybug larvae MURDERERarhhhhhhhhhhh. I got all tickled after my walk when I came back and saw three ladybug pairs breeding!!! So, I started squishing the larvae I could find.!!!!! Then, I got back to the business of clearing branches and limbs. I came in feeling pretty good. Thought I'd check and see what was up. The moths were starting to get to me outside. I don't be lieve this. So, then I looked at the jar I had some in, and granted I'm not into bug killing, cept, grasshoppers, and even them I'm getting softer on as I continue my attempts at allowing a more balanced playing field. Birds like to eat them. I punched holes in the lid. But, I don't know... I dumped the whole thing on the front porch. I couldn't look. I DON'T BLANKITY BLANK BLANK BELIEVE THIS!

Montezuma, NM(Zone 5b)

Oh, by the way. Thank you so very much. :>{ big sigh...

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

YOu should watch them daily Koko...at a point in time the larvae will attach themselves to a leaf, the begin shrinking...as they shrink (in length) they start to develop their hardshells, then the color changes to the adult color and so on. Pretty amazing, eh?

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

Well at least you saved some of them right? I'm sure you'll never forget what they look like now will you?! LOL

You're very welcome :)

Montezuma, NM(Zone 5b)

Shoe, I will definately be on the look out for that process. My fruit trees have become a regular ladybug breeding frenzi! I should have no problem catching that site.

MB, I absolutely had quite a learning experience last night. I will never forget what ladybug larvae look like. And, I will be passing the information along like a regular ladybug larvae ambassador. The county extension agent was by today and I already passed that info on to him. I don't have to worry about saving them either. I found a dozen ladybugs on one small branch of another fruit tree. I sa I did little damage to their population. Others have set up house in another three or four of my fruit trees and are really partying it up! I LOVE BENEFICIALS!

Thank you both! :)

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

:) Just glad I could help ya save the Ladies! lol

Yep, Ladybug larvae..........had a special on it on HGTV last week. First time I'd seen them too.

Strange looking little things aren't they??
My pecan tree is a haven for them every year, I usually move them around to the front where I need them.
