Eumeces fasciatus

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

I caught a glimpse of this Skink feeding off ants on the Oak tree. I only recall seeing one this big and colorful once before. I did some reading up and found out this guy was in breeding season, that is why his jowl was so bright. He is the same breed of skink that I see often, just that the young look so different. Isn't he pretty?

Is this the 5 lined skink or the red headed one? I wish we saw more of them around our house. We have one big one that lives near our back door. I love to see them relaxed in the sun.
