prune lilac?

Claremore, OK(Zone 6b)

I have some white lilacs that finally bloomed this year, on about three leggy branches! Will they branch out better if I prune them back? How much? Also have some two-year-old vigourous shrubs that were babies from a huge old-fashioned lilac from across the street, but no blooms yet! How long does it take? Thanks! Linda

I have some lilacs that I planted about 6 years ago that just bloomed for the first time last year. They only had about 4 or 5 blooms each. I just cut off the spent blooms and let them do their thing, and this year there are several blooms on each one. They are only about 5 foot tall though. I think lilacs are pretty slow growers, especially here. I've heard of people trimming lilacs, but I know you have to be careful about it, so you don't cut off the growth that will give you blooms next year. I don't know much about it, but I'll try a google search and see what I come up with.

This one is pretty good. I think I need to prune mine too.

Thanks, Joan! Makes sense. Linda

I heard somewhere to never let lilacs get over 10-12 feet tall if you want lots of blooms.
