What is going on here? Please help.

Plano, TX(Zone 8a)

I just discovered this on 2 plants of mine. One of them is a Lythrum and I also found some on my Salvia greggi.

Can anyone tell me what is causing those brown 'burnt on looking circles' on the leaves, and something black that is curling the leaves as well. It sure doesn't look good and is starting to stunt the plants' growth. :(

Thanks for any help.

Jules that looks like damage from four lined bugs http://images.google.com/images?q=four+lined+bug&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en&btnG=Google+Search

They run under leaves and hide when you approach so it's hard to see them.

Oh my goodness, poppysue, you're right! I saw ONE of those little buggers, but never believed IT was making all this trouble. Oh man, they're history now! Someone told me it looked like bugs could be the problem, but I had a hard time believing it, because I couldn't see any bug infestation as I expected, that would make this kind of damage. I checked out the link you posted, and even they say that it only takes a few bugs to make a lot of damage.

Thanks! I'm off to exterminate them ... :)

I've always been plagued by them. I just recently found out what the were called when Calalily posted a link here. That was even after I brought some of the dead bugs to a local garden center to help ID them. Needless to say... they were no help.

See, that's what I thought too, that I wouldn't get the help I needed at the local garden shop. Been there, done that!

That's why I'm so grateful for all the help I get here at DG. You guys are just so smart. Thanks again, poppysue, I really appreciate the help.

You might also take some to your County Extension office, they should offer you a solution of how to get rid of them.

binky, I just searched the internet, and several places recommended that these bugs can be controlled with insecticidal soap or a labeled insecticide such as Sevin. I just happened to have some liquid Sevin at home, so I mixed some up and used that quickly. I hate using chemicals, and only do so in an emergency. I guess the next time I spray, I'll use insecticidal soup.

Anyone with a better solution? Would love to hear it. :)
