I seem to get lots of these little black ants (rather small) when I place rocks in my beds...or even more so it seems with shredded leaves where there is some shelter for them I guess. Will they cause any problems with the plants or are they harmless? So far, I haven't seen them to be a problem.
Ant in mulch a problem?
well black ants in mulch could be carpenter ants, but not necessarily there are a lot of black ants. the thing is you don't want them to get into your house. they eat wood. if you see sawdust anywhere in your house, basement etc that is a sign of the critters having gotten in.
i have some black ants in my garden, not carpenters, that just love this one particular plant. forget name. anyways they just crawl around it. no problem except to gross me out when i deadhead. lol
