Getting rid of scorpions?

Dripping Springs, TX

That yucky time of year is starting up for me. I walk around at night--inside my house shining that weird little UV black light to catch and kill the scorpians. Any other ideas?

SCORPIONS ???????

You wouldn't see me for dust!!!

They're really gross. They climb all over our ceilings at night. My DH got stung last year. The scorpian was in a dish towel. He wasn't that worried about it--now he double checks everything. He thought I was fussing about nothing.

No remedy here, but have a friend who was on vacation in Belize and was stung and the guide put a fresh slice of tomato on it to ease the pain. I understand they cause excruciating distress.

Found some info on this thread may help.

Sounds like irradication is a long, tedious task.

Thanks--I've tried all of that and more. I use a bait that the crickets and grasshoppers eat and die. We don't have cockroahes--too dry here I guess. We have boric acid and Pyrethrin in our walls and insulation. They are tough. I guess it could be worse--my Aunt killed 9 rattlesnakes in FlA.

And That Folks is why this Northerner is staying in the North! The way they describe it you would have to live in an airtight environment with no fenced yard and no trees or plants of any kind as well as use pesticides regularly to be rid of them....nope, I'll stay in the north!

I'll never complain about Japanese Beetles or camel crickets again!

Dripping Springs, TX

I know two ways to get rid of those. Can I move to your house Nathalyn? LOL

Knoxville, TN(Zone 7a)

Desertrose, you are more than welcome at my house as long as you DON'T bring snakes or scorpions with you. Of course, everyone at my house is assigned "yard" duty which includes mowing, weeding and watering..... And picking off slugs. Of course if I had another helper, I might have to buy more property or even get a greenhouse..... Nat :)

Dripping Springs, TX

I've got 15 acres and I'm always moving rocks. Your yard work sounds like nothing. The only way to guarantee that there aren't any scorpians is to show up with the clothes on my back and nothing else.

Knoxville, TN(Zone 7a)

Well, I suppose we could "hose" you down to make sure! But you would probably be bored with my little acre. But if you ever want to visit some "granny" flowers, head on over to Tennessee. Of course with our high humidity, you'd probably have to sit a spell and relax on one of my porches.

Ahhhh, such is the life.

I'd get a "mouser" (a cat that like to hunt), my silly little indoor kitty was a real life saver when I lived in El Paso! She'd find anything that moved and sit hovering over it chattering her jaws... she is a tiny siamese, not very great mouser material, but she did a fine job... our house had tan wall to wall carpet of all the silly things... scorpions are tan in El Paso... at least the ones who invaded my house. I'd have located them the hard way (ouch!) if it wasn't for her!

I LOVE THE RAINY COOL PACIFIC NORTHWEST. NO COCKROACHES, NO SCORPIANS, NO SNAKES! JUST RUST!

I've had pretty good luck using diatomaceous earth to discourage scorpions (in our AZ house). They still come in occasionally, but the d.e. disables and eventually kills them. Poisons just work on insects in my experience; scorpions aren't insects. Outdoors, I leave them alone. The crickets they eat have done a lot more damage and I rarely see a cricket anymore. Same with the rattlesnakes--they control the rodent population. Killing predators of any size and kind just allows their prey to multiply exponentially.

I'm in Florida and we have those little tan scorpions too.
I got outta bed the other day and got online, not ten minutes later I went to make mum's bed (the bed I had been in ALL night) caught sumpin move outta the corner of my eye...I had been SLEEPING WITH A SCORPION!!!!.....Oh man, I can handle rattle snakes as pets, done that...but SCORPIONS are like little Mini Satans. :~|.After reading this post , I got my feet up and my toes curled...arghh!!!!! ( psst, did you know that a scorpion can live over ten minutes in pure bleach?...wanna know how I found THAT out?!!)) :~)).

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

crim, I am all the way in Washington state and jumpin' and screamin' just reading your note. I occasionally find ugly black spiders in my basement and those send me screaming. 10 min in bleach?

Woodburn, OR(Zone 8a)

I'm with you, Anastasia, the worst thing here is webbed feet from all the rain! oh and giant slimy slugs. If I saw a scorpion in my house I'd pop a wheelie all the way out the door!

An exterminator used boric acid in my attic, and that was in 2001. I had just a few scorpions more that year, as it was almost the end of summer. Last year, I killed a few, but not as many all season as I had been killing daily in the previous year. This year I have only seen two. I'm sure it's about time to put out more boric acid, but it really helped. Before cancer, I used to set off numerous bug bombs in the house and attic and even under the house, at least twice a year, and that must have kept the numbers down. Then I wasn't able to do that and didn't want to risk the possible bad effects of the chemicals, so they really multiplied.

Recently, Dave posted a picture of one, and I think that thread had some hyperlinks. I'm not sure if they led to info about control.

I have sprayed some with adhesive, after seeing half a dozen or more stuck in flooring adhesive left along the edge of some new vinyl. I have also used hornet and wasp spray on some, and they had their feet in the air pretty fast. Usually, I just instinctively stomp or otherwise smash them before I think about it.

Tucson, AZ(Zone 9b)

Ah come on you guys!! Everyone has to have something scarry!!haha
I put three "bombs" under my house twice a year (I live in a mobil home) Now,I have one place in my garden that wants to drain under the house and once in a while when it does of course its humid under there. I keep all my "dangereous" chemicals there and every so often just to be sure I throw out so diazanon, malethon, or any other bad poison I have and I have never seen one scorpion. Now I also spray my house about every 2 or 3 months. I am the biggest chicken of all when it comes to spiders.I ALMOST HATE TO TELL YOU GUYS THIS, we have black widows and the nasty brown recluse. Havn't seen any of these either. My daughter just found a 4'rattlesnake in her yard last week. Now guys we do have some serious "monsters" in this desert but now keep in mind we also have gardening almost year around and I love green green green!I'm not an advocate of all kinds of poisons but its either spray or else and I think the key is to spray on a regular basis. They have these "bombs" especially for these kinds of spiders and they really do work. Yes I do have kitties and have to do my spraying and bombing in sections for their protection. Knock on wood, so far so good.I do also have boric acid lining all my cupboards.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

Let me tell you that I think I would rter be shot then stung again by a scorpion. Here in Tombstone there is a dreadful investaion of them. I have my house sprayed monthly and dusted underneath. I was stung 4 times on the inside of my foot and was in such distress. Poision control said to take the strongest pain killer I had. Wouldn't you know all I had was asprin until the nest morning. My leg was numb up to my knee for 3 days. Just the thought of them gives me the creeps now.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8a)

boy my spelling has gotten really bad or I'm writting way too fast. Sorry

Tucson, AZ(Zone 9b)

Dear Tombsonejan,
I was in St.David for quite a while and believe me, I am scared of these "critters". As much as I am out in my garden, I have been very very lucky. I am so scared that they are going to get under my mobil that I spray every time I turn around!!
Hope you are ok now

Orlando, FL(Zone 9b)

We have those things here, too. I haven't had the misfortune of running across one yet. I think I would have to move to another state if I had the kind of infestation you talk about, desert rose!
