Melianthus question

Castelnau RB Pyrenée, France(Zone 8a)

My mother has a Melianthus which has been badly affected by frost. The leaves are brown and withered. However the new growth is being made at the tips of the leaf stalks, which would mean leaving them tatty and very unattractive.
Although there is no sign of new growth from the base at the moment, I wondered if anyone has experience of growing this plant and knows whether we can confidently cut down the upper growth to allow a new plant to develop from the base?

Would be grateful for any ideas :)

Hi Phlomel, mine has done exactly the same. Reading in one of my books it says that you can cut them down, or that they are sometimes cut down by frosts, and will sprout again from the base.

Oh that's great news, thanks Sue :)

I had a feeling I'd read it somewhere - but of course couldn't find it when I came to look

They're handsome plants aren't they? Well, we can both get the secateurs out then.... Think I'll leave it a while longer as there are probably quite a few more frosts to come yet!
