Clematis Paniculata

Frederick, MD(Zone 6a)

This will be the 2nd year for this fall bloomer. I did not cut at all. When can/should I prune?

Western, PA(Zone 6a)

dohopp, I am in the situation as you are. Hopefully the roots will be developed enough for the plant to start climbing. Mine went up 4' last year. I have a Spirea in front of it to protect the base from the hot summer sun. And this winter every time I went by with the snow shovel I tossed snow on for the moisture. Hope I didn't kill it.

Also dohopp you may be close enough to attend the Longwood Roundup the last weekend of May. See the Roundup Forum.

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8a)

dohopp, just a suggestion in that this is a species clematis, and only 2 yrs young....maybe wait a nd see what happens in the third season....it will probably leap! The group it is in, doesn't really need any pruning other than to tidy up the vine. Blooming in May and June.......sometimes called Cl. maximowicziana. Elaine

NOW!!! This is the perrrfect time! I've been pruning mine for many, many years....can't remember how long!!

Please look in DG's Plant Database, I posted several pictures of mine.
