Isn't that just his exoskeleton? That's what it looks like to me anyway. They will shed their outer shell (exoskelton) as they grow larger (each larval stage in instects is called an instar). This could have been changing instars.
Could be...do they eat it like the cats sometimes do? This one sure looks/looked like it's eating!
