Knitting class

For a while now I have wanted to learn how to knit. I'm sure all of you are experts. I have a rather embarassing question that I'd rather ask here than at my first class. I write with my left hand but do things like play tennis with my right. Does this make me a left-handed knitter or a right-handed knitter? I tried many years ago but seemed to be hopeless - then it occurred to me that I was maybe trying to learn with the wrong hand? I need help so that I don't become a knitting dropout - Please~and Thanks~
