had trouble with my seeds germinating as well so gave up and went and bought a Cross Vine instead. Not as pretty as the Clematis but needed something.

Some clematis need a double dormancy to germinate...that means at least two years, sometimes three. There are some varieties that will sprout easier however...Sweet Autumn clematis, Radar Love, and clematis drummondii, although they need cold stratification first.

I bought some from Park Seed and they only had about a 20% germination, but I have two or three that are now about two feet tall. I also got some crape myrtle seeds and thought they would not germinate. I finally plopped the few remaining seeds in a pot and set them outside about three weeks ago. Lo and behold, everyone of them sprouted. Wonder if the clematis seeds would have done better outside in the warmer weather???
