Anti-Virus Program?

I have been using Kaspersky for several years; however, the program is now telling me that my "license has expired" and it is not due to expire until December 20, 2002. Yesterday, I paid $19.95 to download their KavLite anti-virus and although the download and installation went fine, the icon is just "sitting" on my desktop doing nothing far as I can tell.
Won't be the first $20 I have thrown away, and I am really having a problem contacting the company so thought I would look around for another anti-virus program.
Any thoughts on what is the best?
