Lemon Tree is SAD !

Weatherford, TX(Zone 7b)

I have a 10 year old lemon tree. The tree has been on a deck all summer until elms started dropping sap.Now the top leaves are very pale with black spots that will wash off with water when rubbed with fingers. Is this from the elm tree sap or would inseticidal soap help? I have never had this problem before with it,however I have never seen these elm trees sap like they did this year.Anyone know why? I am zone 8A Texas. Thanks!

Weedlady, your problem sounds like you could have "sooty mold" on your leaves. Your elm tree has an infestation of aphids or some other insects. The sooty mold is the the secretion that the insects are dropping on your lemon tree causing a fungus, commonly known as honey-dew. First you need to ID what insect you have on the elm then control that problem. Hope this helps you out.
