Black berry too close to Hosta

San Francisco, CA

I have a black berry growing from under the neighboor's fence and I am killing it with brush be gone and high nitrogen plant food. But, I am worried about the little hosta in the photo, it is too close, but I just transplanted it two weeks ago. I hope it will be alright. I cleared the soil away from the root, which grew very big in spite of me constantly pulling it out of the ground.
Left unchecked the roots will expand, taking over the entire bed, so I had to do something.

I am sorry that my photo did not post, but I will try again. Here is the photo.

BG, I am in total sympathy with you, I hate blackberry vines! They are such a problem to eradicate. Even after excavating all the soil out and replacing it with compost, we have to keep an eye on the stuff coming through the neighbors' fences! It's a constant battle.

i love my black berry plants specaly when the local B&B's pay me $3 a pint for berrys

This won't help the hosta issue - but blackberries can be overcome IF they are in an area where you can run a mower ....... out here in the country, the huge canes love to invade from the perimeter that belongs to no one who cares ....... but they don't persist w/ mowing.

I bought a thornless boysenberry some years back and found it to be absolutely tasteless, and not deserving of a honored location in my garden. Need I tell you that even after breaking the handle on the garden shovel trying to unearth the root that I still have it popping up here and there - and I can certainly tell it from the natives, who DO have thorns.

my thornless blackberrys sure aren't tastless
