Honeysuckle de-foliated

Hope I have the right forum for this. In the spring of 2001 I planted a honeysuckle (lonicera mandarin)in full sun. It was growing great & then all of a sudden the leaves were being eaten around the edges & the leaves that weren't stripped would end up skeletonized. This spring it was doing great with lots of leaves & I kept pinching it back so had lots of branches. It was getting really full. Then it was last year all over again. I had to plant morning glory this year to cover all the naked honeysuckle branches on the trellis. I have looked all over & could not find a worm or insect that could have been eating it. There are no aphids. There were lots of ants of the trellis though. Does anyone have any ideas or had a similar problem. I am at the point where I will be ripping it out if the same thing happens again next year. Would appreciate any ideas.

My honey suckles are always attacked by aphids. If you have ants around it they're probably herding the aphids to your vine. It could also be dry weather?? I chopped one of mine down in mid summer this year because it looked so awful. It's put out some healthy looking new growth now... but no blloms.

To be honest I've about had it with my two vines. I'm ready to rip them out and try something different. I've had maybe two years that I was pleased with them and the other 8 years have been a nightmare.

I have 2 Honey suckles that are gorwing great but niether have bloomed. This is a mystery since in the wild they perform. I like the greenery so will keep them, just started gardening and need something to fill the void!

Thanks guys. I think I am going to do what Poppysue is thinking of doing. Just get rid of it. It just frustrates me to go out everyday & see more eaten leaves until I am just left with the bare stalks. Maybe I'll plant a clematis in its place or just plant morning glory.
