1 gal. plastic milk jugs

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

As soon as one is empty I rinse it out and fill with water.I place it in the freezer to help keep it full. When we need cracked ice i simply hit a couple times with a hammer and cut it open with an exacto knife. Makes a lot of cracked ice!

Since we are dependent on an electric well pump for water it has also provided us with an emergency drinking water supply when the power is out from winter storms. No need to keep expensive store bottled water. Water tastes fresh when thawed and the extra ice in the freezer kept meat from thawing out during a 6 day outage one winter. Made me glad I kept the freezer full and saved us a lot of money and trouble!
