Here in northern Illnois we have discovered a new insect in the past week. It is the size of a lightning bug/firefly but is yellow not brown but does have the stripes on the back. They are ALL OVER rudbeckias and sedum blooms. Are they harmful?

Is it this? http://www.sel.barc.usda.gov/selhome/gbu/poecilocapsus.html
or this http://www.madbbs.com/~tracy/photo/palwing.htm
the first one is bad, the second one is good.
Hey Cala - I have those 4-lined plant bugs! I've never been able to get an ID on them. I even brought some into a nursury to see if they could ID it. I haven't had too many the last couple years but one year there was a lot of them. They don't seem too fickle about what they eat either. I'm glad to finally have an ID - I think I'll go read up about them :-]
Glad to help Poppysue. I like bugs, well, really I like ID'ing bugs. I like books that have them separated by colors and shapes. Makes them easier to identify.
