strange butterfly

montgomery, AL(Zone 7b)

I saw the strangest butterfly by the pond today. It had dark purplish wings With orange dots on the bottom..it's body was 2 colors.. bright blue on top & orange bottom half. The most weird part was on the back of the wings (at least thats how it appeared) There was what looked like feelers that went around in circles constantly moving. I didn't have the camera & figured when I got up off the ground where I was sitting it would be gone. I have never seen one like it before.

Calilily that is it. It was the Great Purple Hairstreak. It sure looked different & never saw one before. Should it be in the panhandle of Florida? Thanks a lot for IDing it for me. It was so odd how whatever that is behind it kept going around in circles.

I looked it up in google & found mistletoe is the host tree. We have a oak tree that is full of mistletoe. Maybe we will see more.

The circles threw me, I couldn't figure out what they could be, but that's the only one that was purple with orange dots and was in the US.

That is strange, since Mistletoe is a Parasite, not a tree. Didn't know a Parasite could be a host plant.

Eyes, I know mistletoe is a parasite..just a slip of the tongue or finger calling it a tree :) It is slowing killing the tree.

Yep, a parasite can be a host too, just the chain of life. Sort of like mites that get on bugs.
