I have masses of black caterpillars eating my black walnut trees to death.
We have found tent saks full on the trunks of trees. Its not gypsy moths-any one know what they are and what to spray on them?
They look like a gypsy moth caterpillar-but all black kind of a grayish fuzz to them too?????
HELP save my trees!!!!!!!
eating my black walnut trees????
Hmmm...sounds like it could be Fall Army Worms. We get them here in abundance this time of year. (But you say the nests are on the trunks?...they usually make them in the branches.)
We usually get the green-ish colored ones here but there is a black variety. http://cropwatch.unl.edu/photos/slides/farmywrm_larv2.jpg
Regardless of what kind of worm if they are really defoliating the trees you can spray Bt. I'd get the liquid form sold as Thuricide. Spray the leaves.
