Deleting cookies; what might I loose

I've 1188 cookies an growing. I notice some have my user name. Will I have to go through reregistration if I eliminate all cookies?

One person claims to have lost a game by eliminating cookies and others say that is nonsense. Who's side do you come down on?

If I just go to the cookies folder and select delete I get a grey box with a warning. Do these people who advocate deleting all cookies every day empty the file some other way than just delete?
